Israeli commandos on Monday stormed six ships carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists on an aid mission to the blockaded Gaza Strip, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens after encountering unexpected resistance as the forces boarded the vessels.

The operation in international waters off the Gaza coast was a nightmare scenario for Israel that looked certain to further damage its international standing, strain already-tense relations with Turkey, and draw unwanted attention to Gaza's plight.

Television reports in Israel and Turkey said as many as 19 people were killed in the clashes at sea, but the higher death toll could not be immediately confirmed.

The two sides offered conflicting accounts of what happened.

A reporter on one of the boats said the Israelis fired at the vessel before boarding it.
Israel claims its naval forces met violent resistance from the ship's passengers - knives and clubs, but also live fire - and so they fired back.
A Turkish TV journalist on board one ship reported that members of the flotilla raised a white flag to the Israeli military, after one person had been killed. But it was quickly clear, CBS News correspondent Richard Roth reports, that there had been several more dead and wounded among the 600 or so passengers.

Across Gaza and the West Bank, there is outrage, Roth said. Palestinians are calling it a massacre. And in Turkey, there have been angry protests denouncing Israel. Turkey called for an urgent U.N. meeting.

With Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scheduled to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House tomorrow to discuss the Middle East peace process, Rith said, the political and diplomatic fallout is just beginning.

The activists were headed to Gaza on a mission meant to draw attention to a 3-year-old Israeli blockade of the coastal territory. Israel imposed the blockade after Hamas militants took power there.

"It's disgusting that they have come on board and attacked civilians. We are civilians," said Greta Berlin, a spokeswoman for the Free Gaza movement, which organized the flotilla.

Speaking from the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus, she said she had lost contact with the flotilla at about 3:30 a.m. (0030 GMT).

Israel had declared it would not allow the ships to reach Gaza and had offered to transfer the aid to Gaza from an Israeli port. Israeli naval commandos raided the ships while they were in international waters after ordering them to stop about 80 miles from Gaza's coast, according to a pro-Palestinian activist in Greece involved in the aid mission.

A Turkish website showed video of pandemonium onboard one of the ships, with activists in orange life jackets running around as some tried to help an activist apparently unconscious on the deck. The site also showed video of an Israeli helicopter flying overhead and Israeli warships nearby.

Turkey's NTV showed activists beating one Israeli soldier with sticks as he rappelled from a helicopter onto one of the boats.

The al-Jazeera satellite channel reported by telephone from the Turkish ship leading the flotilla that Israeli navy forces fired at the ship and boarded it, wounding the captain.

"These savages are killing people here, please help," a Turkish television reporter said.

The broadcast ended with a voice shouting in Hebrew, "Everybody shut up!"

The Israeli military said troops only opened fire after encountering unexpected resistance from the activists. Activists attacked troops with knives and iron rods, and one activist wrested a serviceman's weapon.

Israel's deputy foreign minister, Danny Ayalon declared that weapons had been found on board the ship, prepare din advance for use.

"The organizers' intent was violent, their method was violent and the results were unfortunately violent," Ayalon said. "Israel regrets any loss of life and did everything to avoid this outcome."

At least five Israeli soldiers were wounded, including at least one hit by gunfire, the army said. Two of the dead activists had fired at soldiers with pistols, the army said.

"They planned this attack," said Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovitch. "Our soldiers were injured from these knives and sharp metal objects ... as well as from live fire."

The ships were being towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod, and the wounded were evacuated by helicopter to Israeli hospitals, officials said. Sporadic clashes were still going on at midmorning.

There were no details on the identities of the casualties, or on the conditions of some of the more prominent people on board, including 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, European legislators, and Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein, 85.

Satellite phones onboard the ships were turned off, and communication with a small group of reporters embedded with the Israeli military was blocked.

The Free Gaza Movement is an international group of pro-Palestinian activists that claims the blockade, imposed three years ago after the militant Islamic Hamas group overran Gaza, is unjust and a violation of international law.

Hamas leaders in the Syrian capital - where the movement is based - sent a statement to CBS News condemning the naval siege as "piracy," reports CBS News' George Baghdadi.

"We call on the international community, in front of which are the Arab countries, to denounce this crime and work to bring the Zionist war criminals who are exercising piracy in the international waters to account," said Hamas, which is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and its allies, but a legitimate resistance movement and political force by many in the Arab and Muslim world.

Organizers of the flotilla included people affiliated with the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Palestinian group that often sends international activists into battle zones, and the IHH, a Turkish aid group that Israel accuses of having terrorist links.

News of the attack sparked violent protests in Turkey, which had unofficially supported the aid mission and has been vocally critical of Israeli military operations against Palestinians in Gaza.

Police blocked dozens of stone-throwing protesters who tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. The CNN-Turk and NTV televisions showed dozens of angry protesters scuffling with Turkish police and shouting, "Damn Israel."

The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli raid and said it was summoning the Israeli ambassador for an "urgent explanation." It says Israel violated international law and will suffer consequences.

Israeli security forces were on alert across the country.

The flotilla of three cargo ships and three passenger ships carrying 10,000 tons of aid and 700 activists was carrying items that Israel bars from reaching Gaza, like cement and other building materials. The activists said they also were carrying hundreds of electric-powered wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers to the territory's 1.5 million residents.

"We did not want to see confrontation," said Mark Regev, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in Ontario at the time of the raid.

"We made repeated offers to the boats that they come to the (Israeli) port of Ashdod unload the humanitarian cargo, and we guaranteed to pass all humanitarian items through the crossings to the Gaza Strip. Unfortunately, they rejected our offers and chose the path of confrontation."

The head of the Gaza Hamas government, Ismail Haniyeh, condemned the "brutal" Israeli attack.

"We call on the Secretary-General of the U.N., Ban Ki-moon, to shoulder his responsibilities to protect the safety of the solidarity groups who were on board these ships and to secure their way to Gaza," Haniyeh told The Associated Press.

The violent takeover threatened to deal yet another blow to Israel's international image, already tarnished by war crimes accusations in Gaza and its three-year-old blockade of the impoverished Palestinian territory.

The flotilla began the journey from international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday afternoon after two days of delays.

After nightfall Sunday, three Israeli navy missile boats left their base in Haifa, steaming out to sea to confront the ships. Two hours later, Israel Radio broadcast a recording of one of the missile boats warning the flotilla not to approach Gaza.

"If you ignore this order and enter the blockaded area, the Israeli navy will be forced to take all the necessary measures in order to enforce this blockade," the radio message continued.

This is the ninth time that the Free Gaza movement has tried to ship in humanitarian aid to Gaza since August 2008.

Israel has allowed ships through five times, but has blocked them from entering Gaza waters since a three-week military offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers in January 2009.

Europe's airlines and airports question flight bans

The bodies representing most European airlines and airports have questioned the need for the unprecedented curbs, which affect millions of travellers.

Airlines that have carried out test flights say planes showed no obvious damage after flying through the ash.

EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said he hoped 50% of Europe's airspace would be risk-free on Monday.

He said the current situation was "not sustainable" and European authorities were working to find a solution that did not compromise safety.

Mr Kallas also said EU transport ministers would hold a video teleconference on Monday to assess the situation. About 17 European countries have closed their airspace.

The flight bans came amid fears that the ash - a mixture of glass, sand and rock particles - can seriously damage aircraft engines. Airlines are estimated to be losing some £130m ($200m) a day.

ACI Europe - which represents major airports - and the Association of European Airlines issued a joint statement urging officials to reconsider the restrictions.

'Dangerous levels of ash'

"The eruption of the Icelandic volcano is not an unprecedented event and the procedures applied in other parts of the world for volcanic eruptions do not appear to require the kind of restrictions that are presently being imposed in Europe," the statement said.

Earlier, several airlines also questioned the curbs.

Peter Hartman, chief executive of Dutch carrier KLM, said there had been "nothing unusual" about a test flight carried out by the airline through the plume, and he hoped to "get permission as soon as possible to partially restart our operations".

Steven Verhagen, vice-president of the Dutch Airline Pilots Association, told the Associated Press news agency: "In our opinion there is absolutely no reason to worry about resuming flights."

Germany's two biggest airlines, Lufthansa and Air Berlin, also said they had carried out test flights without apparent damage, as did Air France.

Air Berlin spokeswoman Diana Daedelow told the BBC: "It is astonishing that these findings... have seemingly been ignored in the decision-making process of the aviation safety authorities."

A British Airways Boeing 747 completed a test flight through the no-fly zone at 30,000ft (9.1km) from Heathrow to Cardiff on Sunday.

While it encountered no problems, no loss of engine performance and no damage to windows, engineers in Cardiff were due to make a more detailed assessment of its engine overnight.

Earlier on Sunday, a UK Met Office plane went through the cloud and encountered dangerous levels of ash, showing that the issue is not whether the cloud is real and dangerous but whether its extent can be accurately mapped, BBC business editor Robert Peston writes.

One possible solution is to put observation planes in the sky, to give a more detailed picture of the location of ash concentrations, and the UK government is therefore trying to obtain more observation planes, from the military in particular, he adds.

Our business editor understands that BA fears it may not be allowed to fly normal services until Thursday at the earliest.

Worsening disruption

UK Transport Secretary Lord Adonis, said "urgent discussions" were taking place between European and international agencies to ease the chaos.

"We want to be able to resume flights as soon as possible, but safety remains my paramount concern," he said.

Weather experts say wind patterns mean the cloud is not likely to move far until later in the week.

Brian Flynn, head of operations at Eurocontrol - which co-ordinates air traffic control in 38 nations - dismissed suggestions the authorities were being over-cautious.

"With the overriding objective of protecting the travelling public, these exceptional measures have to be taken," he said.

Eurocontrol said there were only 5,000 flights in European airspace on Sunday, against 24,000 normally. There was a similar figure on Saturday. All but 55 of 337 scheduled flights by US carriers to and from Europe were also cancelled.

Polish funeral

Since Thursday, countries across northern and central Europe have either closed airspace or shut key airports.

Britain has extended a ban on most flights in its airspace until at least 1900 local time on Monday (1800 GMT).

Ireland is keeping its airspace closed until 1200 GMT on Monday.

Germany had allowed six international airports to open on a limited basis on Sunday but has since closed its airspace until at least 1200 GMT on Monday.

The Netherlands has announced that Dutch airspace will remain closed until at least 1200 GMT on Monday.

Travellers across northern Europe have sought other means of transport, packing out trains, buses and ferries.

The restrictions prevented many world leaders, including US President Barack Obama, from attending the funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski in the southern city of Krakow.

Southern Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano began erupting for the second time in a month on Wednesday, sending a plume of ash 8.5km (5.3 miles) high into the air.

Again disaster, this time earthquake in China

Some 400 people have died and thousands are feared injured after a magnitude-6.9 quake hit western China's Qinghai province, officials say.

The powerful tremor struck remote Yushu county, 800km (500 miles) south-west of the provincial capital Xining, at 0749 (2349 GMT), at a shallow depth of 10km.

Most of the buildings in the worst-hit town of Jiegu were wrecked, and landslides have cut off roads.

Police said hundreds of survivors had already been pulled from the rubble.

And at least one aid flight had been able to land at the local airport, according to officials.

Senior Yushu official Huang Liming announced the latest death toll of 400, as the extent of the damage became clearer.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that at least 10,000 people are injured.

A local official in Jiegu told the BBC that almost all of the buildings in the town had been destroyed.

"The death toll will definitely go up," he said.

About 5,000 specialist quake rescuers have been dispatched from neighbouring provinces plus tents, clothing and blankets.

Many people have fled to the surrounding mountains, amid fears that a nearby dam could burst in the aftershocks hitting the area.

State media reported that officials were trying to drain a reservoir after a crack appeared in the dam.

Most of the damage has been to houses built of wood and mud, but some larger concrete buildings have been badly damaged as well.

A spokesman for the local government, Zhuo Huaxia, told China's state news agency Xinhua: "The streets in Jiegu are thronged with panic - injured people, with many bleeding in the head.

"Many students are buried under the debris due to building collapse at a vocational school.

"I can see injured people everywhere. The biggest problem now is that we lack tents, we lack medical equipment, medicine and medical workers."

Another local official told CCTV that contact had been made with 40-50 people buried alive under the rubble of a government building.

Karsum Nyima, the deputy head of news for Yushu TV, told CCTV that houses had gone down "in a flash".

He said: "It was a terrible earthquake. In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off."

"Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members."

One man living in a town near Jiegu told the BBC the damage was extensive.

"As far as I can see, not many buildings have been left standing... Because the houses are flattened, it is very difficult to dig out survivors or the dead."

Survivors are struggling to stay warm in the mountainous region of about 4,000m (13,000 feet) elevation where temperatures drop below 0C (32F) overnight.

Power and water have been cut off, and the road to the local airport is reported to have been blocked by landslides.

In 2008, a huge quake struck in neighbouring Sichuan province, about 800km from Yushu, which left 87,000 people dead or missing and five million homeless.

The dead included many schoolchildren, prompting a storm of controversy over alleged shoddy construction of school buildings.

After the Sichuan quake, the disaster response was widely praised, but the BBC's Damian Grammaticas in Beijing says the remoteness of Yushu means this rescue effort will pose very different challenges.

Although the high-altitude region is prone to earthquakes, officials from the US Geological Survey said this was the strongest tremor within 100km of the area since 1976.

The Yushu region, home to 250,000 mostly ethnic Tibetans, is dotted with coal, tin, lead and copper mines.

The region is roughly half-way between Xining and Lhasa, about 400km from the Qinghai-Tibet railway line.

It also enjoys sub-tropical climate with longer hot days in summer and cool in winter.

The status of capital city is shared by the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria,which in turn are the capitals of the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas.

Until 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the only capital.

The third largest city of the Canary Islands is San Cristóbal de La Laguna (City World Heritage Site) on the island of Tenerife.

Two U.S. spacecraft are set to crash on the moon Friday. On purpose. And we're all invited to watch.

NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite is scheduled to drop its Centaur upper-stage rocket on the lunar surface at 7:31 a.m. ET.

NASA hopes the impact will kick up enough dust to help the LCROSS probe find the presence of water in the moon's soil. Four minutes later, the LCROSS will follow through the debris plume, collecting and relaying data back to Earth before crashing into the Cabeus crater near the moon's south pole.

The LCROSS is carrying spectrometers, near-infrared cameras, a visible camera and a visible radiometer. These instruments will help NASA scientists analyze the plume of dust -- more than 250 metric tons' worth -- for water vapor.

The orbiting Hubble Space Telescope and NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will watch, and photograph, the collisions. And hundreds of telescopes on Earth also will be focused on the two plumes

Many tourists are unaware of the beach clubs' entry policies

Summer is at its peak in Lebanon. Each weekend its famous beach clubs are heaving with people seeking some relief from the oppressive heat.

Thanks to the relative peace in the country, many clubs are now having their best season in years - with thousands of tourists joining the beachside throng.

However, it seems not everyone is welcome at the clubs.

The Lebanese office of campaign group Human Rights Watch says a majority of beach clubs it surveyed are preventing many migrant workers from Asia and Africa from using their facilities.

The clubs are not being quite as specific as that.

It is alleged the bans are on household maids and domestic servants, widely employed by Lebanese families and the many Gulf Arabs among the tourists.

As the vast majority of the maids are women from places like the Philippines, Nepal, Ethiopia and Kenya, it seems no-one can be in any doubt as to who these restrictions are aimed at.

Restrictions enforced

"It's a clear manifestation of the racism that exists in large parts of Lebanese society," says Nadim Houry of Human Rights Watch, whose survey found that 17 out of 27 beach clubs enforce some kind of restriction on migrants.

One of Beirut's best known and oldest beach establishments, The Sporting Club, is among those enforcing such restrictions.

The manager, Marwan Abu Nassar, initially justified the ban on grounds that allowing in maids would attract too many children to the club.

When it was pointed out that there is a children's pool inside the complex - and there are usually many families with youngsters there - Mr Abu Nassar eventually conceded he was operating a policy of discrimination.

"You can call it that, if you want, from a foreigner's point of view," he said.

Marwan Abu Nassar protested that if he started allowing in domestic maids, "we would get complaints, I would lose customers and it would affect my business".

By contrast, other foreigners are welcomed - those from wealthier Western countries, for example. The club is popular with this group of expats though few are seemingly aware of the entry policies.

As a private club, Mr Abu Nassar said, it is up to the management to decide on the rules.

The Sporting Club - and others with similar policies - are doing nothing illegal, as Lebanon has no law against discrimination.

In a country still rebuilding from past conflicts and fearing the possibility of more in the future, this may not seem like a priority issue.

Yet critics say it is symptomatic of a widespread culture of discrimination and of the abuse many of these migrants working in Lebanon suffer.

It is thought that there are currently 200,000 domestic maids in Lebanon, the vast majority of them women from Asia and East Africa.

Tales of mistreatment

Reports of mistreatment are commonplace.

The story of one maid the BBC spoke to is typical. Carrie - not her real name - arrived in Lebanon three years ago at the age of 20, after being recruited in her native Philippines.

Carrie was taken on by another household but claims they beat her and after two months she ran away. She is now effectively stuck in Lebanon because that employer still has her passport.

Every year there are reports of domestic maids in Lebanon committing suicide.

The country's labour ministry says a new law granting migrant workers better rights is awaiting approval, once a new government is formed.

In a statement it condemned the practice of banning maids from beach clubs as, "an act of discrimination and racism".

The new law will be a "good sign", says MP Ghassan Mkheiber, from the Lebanese parliament's human rights committee.

He adds that there is "a lot of racism in the way the Lebanese deal with people of different nationalities."

Attitudes, he says, need to change.

Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said that the 15-member crew had been taken on board a Russian navy vessel. They were in good condition, he said.

The Finnish-owned Arctic Sea went off radar after passing through the English Channel with its cargo of timber.

Speculation over the cause of its disappearance had ranged from pirates to a mafia dispute to a commercial row.

The Arctic Sea was found at 0100 Monday (2100 GMT Sunday) 300 miles (480 km) off Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean, Tass news agency quoted Mr Serdyukov as telling Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Women 'to join Iranian cabinet'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he will bring at least two women into his new cabinet - the first such appointments in Iran since the 1970s.

He told Iran TV he would propose Fatemeh Ajorlou as social security minister and Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi as health minister, among others.

Mr Ahmadinejad was sworn in for a second term on 5 August amid a crisis triggered by disputed polls in June.

Meanwhile another 28 people have gone on trial over post-election unrest.

More than 100 people are already on trial in Iran following the election, among them a number of senior politicians.

The trials have been criticised by several foreign powers, opposition groups and human rights campaigners, but authorities insist their legal proceedings are completely legitimate and conform to international standards of justice.

'Rightful demands'

The latest trial comes a day after Mr Ahmadinejad's main opponent in the election, Mir Hossein Mousavi, vowed to continue challenging the result in a social movement called Green Path of Hope.

"The Green Path of Hope is formed for the sake of people's rightful demands and for claiming their rights," the reformist Etemad Melli newspaper quoted him as saying.

Official election results awarded Mr Ahmadinejad a sweeping victory in the polls. He is expected to announce his full cabinet line-up on Wednesday.

MPs have to approve the ministers in a confidence vote, and have warned the president that they must be "experienced", amid criticisms of his frequent reshuffles and dismissals during his first term.

Foreign media, including the BBC, have been restricted in their coverage of Iran in the wake of the election protests.

"But Web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we're opening up a Web developer preview to collect feedback," wrote Google software engineers Sitaram Iyer and Matt Cutts.

Although Google maintains a stranglehold on the market for Web queries both in the United States and around the world -- accounting for 65% of U.S. searches in June, according to comScore Inc. -- the Mountain View, Calif. company has recently ceded some of the search engine spotlight to Microsoft Corp.

Microsoft first earned kudos from developers and a significant amount of buzz from the online community after releasing a revamped version of its search engine, Bing, in June and then following it up by striking a deal with Yahoo Inc. to provide search technology on sites owned by the Web pioneer on July 29.

Iran: US nationals nabbed over 'illegal entry'

Iran's security officials confirm the arrest of three American nationals in Western city of Marivan, charging the detainees with "illegal entry".

“The three, who have not been identified yet, were arrested on the Malakh- Khur border area in Marivan," Iraj Hassanzadeh, the deputy governor of Kurdistan for political-security affairs, told Fars news agency.

He said the 'middle-aged' men were traveling on Syrian and Iraqi visas, noting all those who try to 'illegally' cross Iran's borders will be arrested.

The US had earlier asked Swiss embassy in Tehran -- which looks after US interests in Iran as the two countries have no diplomatic ties -- to follow the case of the three Americans.

A Kurdish official in northern Iraq told AFP that the US nationals were backpackers who were arrested after warnings on the Iraqi side not to hike in the mountains because of the proximity of the border with Iran.

However, Colonel Anwar Haj Omar of the Halabja police force in northern Iraq linked the three Americans to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), according to Voices of Iraq.

Head of the Iranian Parliament's foreign policy committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, has said the case will take its natural course.

US public against Afghanistan, Iraq wars

As the Obama administration struggles to handle the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, a majority of Americans are against the long-fought wars, a new poll says.

The AP-GfK Poll released on Thursday showed that 63% of respondents oppose the war in Iraq and 53% oppose the war in Afghanistan.

This is while 34% favor the Iraq battlefield and 44% favor the conflict in Afghanistan, according to the poll.

The survey also revealed that 56% of Americans approve President Barack Obama's handling of the situation in Iraq and 55% approve his handling of Afghanistan. Both numbers are down just slightly since April.

July is already the deadliest month of the war for both US and NATO forces with 63 international troops killed, including 35 Americans and 19 Britons.

Seven and half years after the US-led coalition invaded Afghanistan to allegedly root out the country's militancy US Vice-President Joe Biden in an interview with the BBC said that groups based on Afghanistan's border with Pakistan could 'wreak havoc' on the US and Europe.

"In terms of national interest of Great Britain, the US and Europe, (the war) is worth the effort we are making and the sacrifice that is being felt," he added.

The US Vice President also warned "there are more to come" and US and UK casualties could be expected to climb.

The poll has been released days after US Defense Secretary Robert Gates acknowledged that the Obama administration will risk losing public support for the war in Afghanistan if the coalition forces fail to turn the situation around within a year.

The poll was conducted July 16-20 and involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide.

Military practice causes devastating fire in France

One of France's worst fires for three years has raged on the eastern outskirts of Marseille burning dozens of homes.

The wildfire caused after military practice shelling hit the eastern Trois-Ponts suburb of the southern city, forcing the evacuation of scores of residents.

The fire moved down a hill outside the city and threatened the Trois-Ponts district where residents sprayed water on the outside of their houses before they moved out. People in neighboring La Barasse also left their homes, although local authorities said no evacuation order had been issued.

A thick black smoke swirled around the district and many residents angrily criticized the French Army which had staged the artillery training at its Carpiagne camp just before the fire started.

Regional Prefect Michel Sappin confirmed that the blaze had been started by the shelling, lashing out at the "imbecilic" action that had led to "an annoying and serious" situation in a zone close to a city and saying he was "exasperated."

"In such weather conditions, with high winds, the army should refrain from carrying out shelling practice," he said

Iran-Mashhad : Sixteen die in Aria Air plane crash in Mashhad

At least 16 people have been killed and 21 others have been injured when an Aria Air plane crash-landed in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

The plane en route to the northeastern city of Mashhad from Tehran crashed as it was attempting to make an emergency landing at the destination at about 18:00 (1430 GMT) Friday, reported Fars news agency.

The aircraft, an Ilyushin Il-62 jet, had 160 passengers and crewmembers onboard. Earlier reports had put the number of deaths at 30 and the number of injured at 20.

Images obtained by Press TV show the cockpit and front part of the fuselage completely destroyed, and the aircraft tipping back on its tail, with the main landing-gear deployed.

The aircraft' was likely to have been the UP-I6208, which indicates that it was registered in Kazakhstan.

A spokesman for the airport said that emergency services were carrying the injured to nearby hospitals, and a full breakdown of deaths and injuries will be provided later.

Post incident videos also show that one of the central emergency chutes on the left side of the cabin had been deployed.

The Il-62 is a long-range airliner with a capacity of about 185 passengers and a fair service record.

The incident comes less than 10 days after another Iranian airliner, a Tupolev-154M, crashed shortly after take-off from Tehran en route to the Armenian capital of Yerevan on July 15, killing all 168 passengers onboard. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

In operation since 1993, it has been used to deliver troops and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and Iraq.

P-8A Poseidon: $290 million
Boeing's spruced-up military version of its 737 jet will be used by the Navy to conduct anti-submarine warfare and gather intelligence. It can carry torpedoes, missiles, depth charges and other weapons. The P-8A is expected to go into service in 2013.

VH-71 Kestrel: $241 million
This high-tech helicopter project, intended to replace the President's aging chopper fleet, was running more than 50% over budget by the time Barack Obama took office. Soon after his Inauguration, the President announced plans to scrap the helicopters because of cost overruns. On July 22, however, the House Appropriations Committee unanimously approved restoring $485 million to fund the Kestrels.

E-2D Advanced Hawkeye: $232 million
A major step forward for surveillance and reconnaissance, the Advanced Hawkeye's powerful new radar system will increase the range of territory an aircraft can monitor by 300%. "It can probably watch the pistachios pop in Iran," an analyst for the think tank Lexington Institute told National Defense in July. Though development of the plane is on track and two test versions have been delivered to the Navy, budget cuts may keep the planes grounded for at least a year longer than planned.

F-35 Lightning II: $122 million
Lockheed Martin's 2001 deal to build these stealth, supersonic fighter jets was at the time the largest military contract ever. The F-35s, intended to replace an aging aircraft arsenal, were developed as part of a Joint Strike Fighter program between the U.S. and its allies and were criticized as underpowered and overweight — and therefore easy targets. Making matters worse, from 2007 to 2008, cyberspies infiltrated the 7.5 million lines of computer code that powered the Joint Strike Fighter, raising concerns that enemies could copy the F-35's design and exploit its weaknesses. In April 2009, Lockheed Martin said it did not believe the program had been compromised.

V-22 Osprey: $118 million
This tiltrotor aircraft, which takes off and lands like a helicopter but can fly faster and farther like a fixed-wing plane, was first used in combat in Iraq in 2007. The Osprey's production has been bedeviled by design and construction problems: the craft claimed the lives of at least 30 Marines and civilians during its development alone (former Vice President Dick Cheney tried repeatedly to ground the plane). Still, because of its range and versatility, the Marine Corps plans to deploy a squadron of V-22s to Afghanistan by the end of the year.

EA-18G Growler: $102 million
Hot off the presses, the Growler is a lightly armed version of the F/A-18 fighter that has been updated for electronic warfare (it is currently being delivered to the Navy). Growlers are capable of not only finding and disrupting anti-aircraft radar, but also jamming enemy communications.

F/A-18 Hornet: $94 million
First entering service in the 1980s, the twin-engine fighter plane was the U.S.'s first strike fighter — an aircraft capable of attacking both ground and aerial targets. People in Asia have seen the longest total solar eclipse this century, with large areas of India and China plunged into darkness.

Amateur stargazers and scientists travelled far to see the eclipse, which lasted six minutes and 39 seconds at its maximum point.

The eclipse could first be seen early on Wednesday in eastern India.

It then moved east across India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Japan and the Pacific.

The eclipse first became total over India at 0053GMT, and was last visible from land at Nikumaroro Island in the South Pacific nation of Kiribati. It ended at 0418GMT.

Elsewhere, a partial eclipse was visible across much of Asia.

Mixed blessing

In India, millions gathered in open spaces from the west coast to the northern plains, with clouds parting in some cities at dawn - just before the total eclipse.

But thick clouds and an overcast sky obscured the view at the Indian village of Taregna, "epicentre" of the eclipse, says our correspondent in the area.

Many of the thousands of people who gathered there to watch the eclipse left the village disappointed.

"We were apprehensive of this cloudy weather but it was still a unique experience with morning turning into night for more than three minutes," scientist Amitabh Pande told the Associated Press news agency.

Some enthusiasts in India were on board a special chartered flight for a close-up view of the eclipse.

The BBC's Sanjoy Majumder, who was on the flight, said that from a vantage point of 41,000ft (12,500m), it was a celestial spectacle like few others.

Among the passengers were a man who was witnessing it for the eighth time, scientists, amateur astronomers and children.

In India and Nepal, where it is considered auspicious to watch the eclipse while immersed in holy water, crowds gathered at rivers or ponds, including tens of thousands of people at Varanasi on the Ganges.

"We have come here because our elders told us this is the best time to improve our afterlife," said Bhailal Sharma, a villager who had travelled to Varanasi from central India.

The event in Varanasi was marred, however, when a woman was killed and several others injured in a stampede on the river banks, police said.

For others, the eclipse was seen to be a bad omen.

In Nepal, authorities shut all schools for the day to avoid exposing students to any ill-effects, says the BBC's Joanna Jolly in Kathmandu.

Some parents in Delhi kept their children from attending school at breakfast because of a Hindu belief that it is inauspicious to prepare food during an eclipse, while pregnant women were advised to stay inside due to a belief that the eclipse could harm a foetus.

"My mother and aunts have called and told me stay in a darkened room with the curtains closed, lie in bed and chant prayers," said Krati Jain, a software worker in Delhi who is expecting her first child.

Authorities in China, where an eclipse was a bad omen in ancient culture, reassured the public that services would run normally.

In the east of the country, heavy cloud or rain obscured it.

Pollution was also a barrier, with thick smog in Beijing blotting out the sky.

'Special opportunity'

The last total eclipse, in August 2008, lasted two minutes and 27 seconds.

Alphonse Sterling, a Nasa astrophysicist who followed the latest eclipse from China, said scientists were hoping data from it would help explain solar flares and other structures of the sun and why they erupt.

"We'll have to wait a few hundred years for another opportunity to observe a solar eclipse that lasts this long, so it's a very special opportunity," Shao Zhenyi, an astronomer at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory in China told the Associated Press.

Solar eclipses allow scientists to see the gases surrounding the sun, or its corona.

Solar scientist Lucie Green, from University College London, was aboard an American cruise ship heading for the point near the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, where the axis of the Moon's shadow passed closest to Earth.

"The [Sun's] corona has a temperature of 2 million degrees but we don't know why it is so hot," she said.

"What we are going to look for are waves in the corona.

"The waves might be producing the energy that heats the corona. That would mean we understand another piece of the science of the Sun."

The next total solar eclipse will occur on 11 July, 2010. It will be visible in a narrow corridor over the southern hemisphere, from the southern Pacific Ocean to Argentina.

Jakarta twin blasts kill 9 , injure 48

Indonesia : At least nine people have been killed and four dozens more injured when explosions ripped through two luxury hotels in the Indonesian capital, authorities say.

The blasts shocked early on Friday at about 0730 local time the Marriott Hotel and the nearby Ritz-Carlton Hotel in central Jakarta's business district, Indonesia's Metro TV reported.

Earlier reports suggested that six people were killed in back-to-back blasts, but failed to give an account of injuries.

Some foreigners are known to be among the dead while several were being taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Health ministry sources now say the death toll may rise as many of the injured are in serious conditions.

Jakarta has been targeted by the militants for several times over some past years.

The deadly attacks on two nightclubs in Bali in October 2002 killed 202 people, including many Australian.

More than a dozen people perished in 2003 when a lethal attack targeted the Marriott in 2003.

Nine people lost their lives in an attack on the Australian embassy in Jakarta in 2004.

IPv6 or IP version 6 is the next generation Internet protocol which will eventually replace the current protocol IPv4. IPv6 has a number of improvements and simplifications when compared to IPv4. The primary difference is that IPv6 uses 128 bit addresses as compared to the 32 bit addresses used with IPv4. This means that there are more available IP addresses using IPv6 than are available with IPv4 alone. For a very clear comparison, in IPv4 there is a total of 4,294,967,296 IP addresses. With IPv6, there is a total of 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 IP addresses in a single /64 allocation.

To also help illustrate the sheer magnitude of available IP addresses using IPv6, you can get 65536 /64 allocations out of a single /48, and then 65536 /48 allocations out of a single /32. Many Service Providers are getting /32 allocations from their Regional Internet Registry (RIR) like ARIN, APNIC, RIPE, etc.

A significant difference between IPv6 and IPv4 is the address notation. IPv4 uses a period (.) between each octet, compared to IPv6 which uses a colon (:). With IPv6, if you have a series of zeroes in a row, the address need not be written out completely. You can use a double colon (::) to represent that series of zeroes, however you can only use that once. For example, if you have an address like "2001:0DB8:0000:0003:0000:01FF:0000:002E", it can be written like "2001:DB8::3:0:1FF:0:2E" or "2001:DB8:0:3:0:1FF::2E", but would never be written like "2001:DB8::3::1ff::2E". You also cannot have three colons in a row (:::).

IPv6 availability depends on your Service Provider, either at home or for work. In a dual-stack environment, IPv4 and IPv6 co-exist along the same connection and don't require any special kind of connection. If dual-stack is not available, you might find yourself using an IP tunneling product or service to bring IPv6 connectivity to you. IPv4 exhaustion, as of this writing, is estimated to happen sometime in early or mid 2011. When this happens, IPv4 won't simply disappear off the face of the Internet, but continued explosive growth requiring more unique IP address assignments will mean using more and more of the abundant IPv6 address space.

Many Operating System platforms have native IPv6 support these days. The UNIX based platforms like Linux, BSD (Free, Open, Net) & MacOSX have had IPv6 support enabled for years now. Microsoft Windows starting having native IPv6 support enabled by default with it's Vista and Windows 2008 products. Earlier Windows versions like 2000/2003/XP had to have it installed optionally, and did not have as robust features that are available in the newer versions of Windows. Even common web browsing and email software will use IPv6 if it is enabled and available, without having to check off an option or special configuration. The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is being worked on to be as seemless as possible, and many might not even notice the subtle changes in the coming years.

Air crash in IRAN ( Breaking news )

Unfortunately An Iranian plane carrying at least 168 passengers and crew has crashed in the north of the country, state media says.

An Iranian official said the plane broke into pieces and all those on board were feared dead.

The plane, reportedly a Tupolev, came down near Jannatabad village in Qazvin province, about 75 miles (120km) north-west of Tehran, state television said.

The Caspian Airlines plane was flying from the Iranian capital to Yerevan in Armenia, Iranian media said.

"The 7908 Caspian flight crashed 16 minutes after its take-off from the International Imam Khomeini Airport," Iran's Aviation Organization spokesman, Reza Jafarzadeh, was quoted by Press TV as saying.

President Obama reached out to Africa in a speech in Ghana on Saturday, praising the continent's achievements but condemning persistent wars, calling them the "millstone around Africa's neck."

"Despite the progress that has been made -- and there has been considerable progress in parts of Africa -- we also know that much of that promise has yet to be fulfilled," Obama said in a speech to the parliament of Ghana, a West African nation seen as a model of democracy and growth for the rest of the continent.

Obama's visit, the third by a sitting American president, highlighted the stability, political strides and painstaking economic progress that Ghana made in being the first sub-Saharan nation to gain independence, in 1957.

This is in sharp contrast to conditions in other continent hot spots cited by Obama -- Zimbabwe, where the society is in economic and political turmoil; Sudan, where fighting rages in the Darfur region, and Somalia, site of civil warfare. Congo and Liberia have also been in the throes of war.

"Here in Ghana, you show us a face of Africa that is too often overlooked by a world that sees only tragedy or the need for charity," Obama said
"The people of Ghana have worked hard to put democracy on a firmer footing, with peaceful transfers of power even in the wake of closely contested elections. And with improved governance and an emerging civil society, Ghana's economy has shown impressive rates of growth."

After his speech, Obama toured Cape Coast Castle, the notorious fort used in the transatlantic slave trade.

After viewing the castle, a visibly moved Obama, who was accompanied by his wife and two daughters, said that the site held special significance for him.

"As Americans, as African-Americans obviously, there's a special sense that on the one hand this place was a place of profound sadness, on the other hand," he said, "it is here where the journey of much of the African-American experience began," he said.

Earlier in the day, Obama in his speech to the country's lawmakers said the kind of nation-building exemplified by Ghana doesn't have the "drama of the 20th century's liberation struggles," but he believes "it will ultimately be more significant."

"We must first recognize a fundamental truth that you have given life to in Ghana: Development depends upon good governance. That is the ingredient which has been missing in far too many places, for far too long," he said. "That is the change that can unlock Africa's potential. And that is a responsibility that can only be met by Africans."

Obama pointed to Kenya -- where his father was born -- as an example of unmet potential.

"Countries like Kenya, which had a per-capita economy larger than South Korea's when I was born, have been badly outpaced. Disease and conflict have ravaged parts of the African continent. In many places, the hope of my father's generation gave way to cynicism, even despair," he said.

"History shows that countries thrive when they invest in their people and infrastructure, when they promote multiple export industries, develop a skilled workforce, and create space for small and medium-sized businesses that create jobs."

Obama said the United States has committed $63 billion to a global, comprehensive health strategy.

General Motors emerges from bankruptcy after 40 days

America's biggest carmaker, General Motors, won a second chance to prove itself as a profitable motor manufacturer today as it emerged from bankruptcy at lightning speed after a remarkably swift, smooth financial restructuring.

After just 40 days under court-supervised protection from its creditors, GM was resurrected as a solvent business shortly after 6.30am when lawyers, completing an all-night paperwork session, signed over its factories, stocks, equipment and intellectual property to a new entity controlled by the US government.

GM's chief executive, Fritz Henderson, pledged to pay back $50bn (£30.9bn) of public loans well in advance of a deadline of 2015 and promised that the streamlined company would be a nimbler, less bureaucratic and more decisive organisation. GM will focus on four vehicle brands - Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

"Business as usual is over at GM," said Henderson at a press conference in Detroit. "Today, we take the intensity, decisiveness and speed of the past several months and transfer it from the triage of the bankruptcy process to the creation and operation of a new General Motors."

He continued: "We recognise that we've been given a rare second chance at GM, and we are very grateful for that. And we appreciate the fact that we now have the tools to get the job done."

The US government owns 60.8% of the new GM, while Canada's government holds 11.7% and a union-controlled pension fund has 17.5%. Creditors of the old company, who were owed $27bn (£16.67), were compensated with a stake of just 10% to the dismay of Wall Street bondholders who fought a short, unsuccessful battle for a larger slice.

President Obama had initially predicted that reforming GM would take 60 to 90 days. But creditors' objections were decisively thrown out by a New York bankruptcy judge, Robert Gerber, in a resounding win for the administration's auto restructuring taskforce.

"This is a major victory for the Obama administration over Wall Street," said Aaron Bragman, a motor industry analyst at IHS Global Insight in Detroit. "The government really put the screws on bondholders and enforced a deal on them that it thought was suitable."

After swapping loans for equity, the new GM has debt of $48bn (£29.6bn), compared to the $170bn (£105bn) burden when it filed for chapter 11 protection. But the transformation has been painful for thousands of employees, parts suppliers and car dealers.

Once cutbacks are complete in 2011, GM is likely to have just 38,000 blue-collar factory workers in the US, compared to 113,000 three years ago. The number of GM plants will fall from 47 to 31 and, through a clear-out of senior management, GM's executive team will shrink by 35%.

The firm, which was once the largest corporation in America, is in the process of selling international names including Saab, Vauxhall, Opel and Hummer as part of its downsizing. In Britain, the decision to offload GM's European operations has cast a cloud of uncertainty over 5,500 jobs at Vauxhall factories in Luton and Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

Henderson said GM's emergence from the bankruptcy courts would allow "every employee, including me, to get back to the business of designing, building and selling great cars and trucks".

He insisted that GM could shake off its reputation for uninspirational designs and slow-moving bureaucracy.

"Einstein's definition of insane is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results," said Henderson. "We know we have to change."

Among GM's priorities will be the development of environmentally-friendly vehicles such as the electrically powered GM Volt, which is due to be launched by the end of next year. GM executives have even reportedly mulled changing the company's distinctive blue logo to a green hue, although Henderson said he did not plan to do this.

New initiatives include a joint venture with the website eBay to explore ways of auctioning cars online, and a forum called 'Ask Fritz' in which customers will be able to share suggestions with the chief executive.

But financial experts warned that the company faces challenges in winning back the trust of customers and the financial community.

"The legacy costs are gone. The challenge in the future is how to approach a marketplace that has been burned by GM," said Pete Hastings, a credit analyst at Morgan Keegan.

Along with its rival Chrysler which also recently went through bankruptcy, GM has been hit by the worst slump in US vehicle sales since the second world war. The company has struggled to cope with high petrol prices, a change in tastes towards smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles and fierce competition from Asian rivals. It has lost its title as the world's leading carmaker to Japan's Toyota.

A new chairman, former AT&T boss Edward Whitacre, will preside over GM's board. He told reporters: "For 100 years, General Motors was among the world's greatest companies. It deserves to be there again and it will be there again."

China's remote Xinjiang region, hit by violence that officials say has left scores dead, has seen a recent surge in unrest involving ethnic Uyghurs.

The Uyghurs are a mainly Sunni Muslim group found throughout Xinjiang, a vast and arid territory that straddles the ancient Silk Road trading route and forms China's western borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan.

With a distinct culture and Turkic-based language, Uyghurs are guaranteed equal rights and limited autonomy under China's constitution, however ethnic tensions run deep. Some Uyghurs feel threatened by the steady influx of migrants from China's overcrowded east.

Millions of Han Chinese, the country's dominant ethnic group, have migrated into Xinjiang over the past 60 years, prompting complaints that they dominate local politics, culture and commerce at the Uyghurs' expense.

The dissatisfaction has turned violent at times, including a major flashpoint in 1992 when several buses were bombed in Urumqi.

BEIJING, China -- Chinese President Hu Jintao changed plans to attend a summit of major economic powers in Italy, instead returning home to address ethnic violence raking northwestern China, state-run media reported Wednesday.

Tensions have been simmering in Urumqi, the capital of China's far-west Xinjiang region, where violent demonstrations over the weekend have left at least 156 people dead and more than 1,000 injured.

The unrest in Urumqi was brought under control with a massive presence of soldiers and anti-riot squads, the government said Tuesday. Curfews were in force in major districts of the capital.

Several small protests erupted despite the heavy police presence and were quickly defused.

More than 1,400 suspects had been detained by Tuesday morning, the Xinhua news agency said, citing government officials conducting the investigation.
Taking Hu's place at the Group of Eight economic summit this week in Italy will be Dai Bingguo, China's state councilor, Xinhua said.

Xinjiang is home to many Uyghurs. China's constitution guarantees ethnic minorities equal rights and limited autonomy. However, ethnic tensions run deep. Minority groups such as the Uyghurs complain that they are subjected to discrimination by the majority Han.

There is speculation that Sunday's protest, which took place in the predominantly Uyghur-populated Bazaar district, may have been a reaction to ethnic violence in southern China.

The violence took place late last month at a toy factory in Guangdong province, where many migrants, including Uyghurs, have moved in search of work. A massive brawl reportedly broke out between workers of Uyghur and Han nationalities. Two Uyghurs reportedly died.

Police have detained 15 suspects in connection with that incident, state-run media reported Tuesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo has said the £80m Real Madrid paid for him is a "fair price" and he is delighted to be the most expensive player in the world. The Portuguese winger will put the finishing touches to his move from Manchester United on Monday night, when he will be officially unveiled as the Spanish giants' latest signing.

Kaka and Raul Albiol have already been presented following their respective moves from AC Milan and Valencia, while Lyon striker Karim Benzema is close to completing his switch as Real's spending spree rapidly approaches the £200m mark. It is the signing of Ronaldo that has captured everyone's attention and imagination, though, as Los Merengues finally got their man this summer to end a transfer saga that has lasted more than two years.

It took an astronomical fee to persuade United to part with the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, and Real have come in for a fair amount of criticism from both inside and outside the footballing community for spending so much money in the current global financial crisis. However, Ronaldo believes the club was justified in paying the fee and also feels he can live up to the price tag.

"I think that it's a fair figure. If Manchester United and Real Madrid agree this amount, then there is nothing more to say," he told Marca. "The great players cost a lot of money, and if you want them you have to pay it. I'm happy to be the most expensive player in the world."

In response to those who have qualms about so much money being spent on one footballer, he added: "I respect everyone's opinions, but I don't agree with these people.

"If Real Madrid have paid so much money, it's because they wanted me and have considered it a fair price. I'm going to try to do everything in my hands to play very well, and I will show that the money they are paying for me has been a good decision."

European ambitions
Ronaldo is the centrepiece of Florentino Perez's revolution, as the returning president looks to take the fallen giants back to the top of the footballing tree. Last season, Real had to watch on in envy as arch-rivals Barcelona won an unprecedented treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League.

Not once in the last five years have the nine-time European champions managed to get past the last 16 in the Champions League. With next season's final being held at the Bernabeu, they will be desperate to go all the way.

Much will be demanded of Ronaldo, but he is confident he can deal with the expectations. "I've been used to having pressure for a long time. In this sense I'm calm," he said.

"This (price tag) isn't something I'm going to think about when I go out on to the pitch, so it's not going to affect me. I know that they are going to demand a lot of me to be successful at the club and I know that I'm going to have much more pressure than at Manchester United, because I was there for many years.

But it means a new challenge and is going to help me be the best footballer. As well as that, Spain is a different league, with different players, a different club, and this is going to motivate me to continue working hard and winning things."

TEHRAN, Iran Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he wants to engage President Obama in "negotiations" before international media, a semi-official Iranian news outlet reported on

Speaking at a meeting of medical school deans, Ahmadinejad said Iran "will soon pursue a new round of diplomatic activity" amid a new position of strength for the Iranian government, the Iranian Student News Agency quotes him as saying.

"I will go to the United Nations and will invite Obama to negotiations," Ahmadinejad said, adding that such talks would be "in front of the international media, not a sit-down behind closed doors in order to talk about matters."

The Obama administration has sought dialogue with Iran but also criticized the government for its handling of unrest after disputed presidential elections.

Last week, Obama said Iran's government must justify itself not in the eyes of the United States, but in the opinion of its own people.

"A sizable percentage of the Iranian people themselves ... consider this election illegitimate," he said at a White House news conference. "It is not too late for the Iranian government to recognize that there is a peaceful path that will lead to stability and prosperity."

Initially, Obama was criticized by Republicans such as Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina for taking a "timid and passive" tone in speaking out against the growing wave of arrests, violence and deaths of pro-democracy activists.

Ahmadinejad said he wants others to stop "meddling" in the internal affairs of Iran

Iranian officials, including Ahmadinejad, claimed nations such as the United States and Britain have meddled in Iranian affairs. Last week, Ahmadinejad said officials were "astonished" over what they called meddling and warned of repercussions if meddling continues.

"Didn't he [Obama] say that he was after change?" Ahmadinejad asked Iranian judiciary officials in a speech last week. "Why did he interfere? Why did he utter remarks irrespective of norms and decorum?"

"They keep saying that they want to hold talks with Iran," Ahmadinejad said. "All right, we have expressed our readiness as well. But is this the correct way [for holding talks]?"

Meanwhile, two major political figures have been meeting family members of those detained amid post-election unrest.

One was former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani -- chief of the Expediency Council and supporter of opposition leader Mirhussein Mossavi, according to the semi-official Iranian Labor News Agency.

The other was Mehdi Karrubi, one of the opposition candidates, who reportedly paid visits to families of political detainees, according to the Etemad-e-Melli, Karrubi's newspaper.

Meanwhile, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported that 20 people between the ages of 35 to 48 were executed in Iran on Saturday for "buying, selling and holding heroin, cocaine and opium."

Entertainer Michael Jackson has died after being taken to a hospital on Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest, CNN has confirmed.

Jackson, 50, had been in a coma at the hospital, sources told CNN.

Brian Oxman, a Jackson family attorney, said he was told by brother Randy Jackson that Michael Jackson collapsed at his home in west Los Angeles, California, Thursday morning.

Family members were told of the situation and were either at the hospital or en route, Oxman said.

"I can only tell you that the family members are crying and I just have not been able to confirm anything, other than to hug them and tell them that I love them," Oxman said.

Fire Capt. Steve Ruda told CNN a 911 call came in from a west Los Angeles residence at 12:21 p.m.

Ruda said Jackson was treated and transferred to the UCLA Medical Center.

Asked specifics of the patient's condition, he said he could not discuss them because of federal privacy laws.

At least 104 others were wounded in the blast which occurred in a crowded food market in Baghdad's Shia neighborhood of Sadr City on Wednesday.

Police say the bomb was hidden under vegetables on a pushcart near a market, adding that the death toll is expected to rise as some of the wounded are in a critical condition.

The deadly attack comes nearly a week ahead of the deadline set for US combat troops' withdrawal from Iraq's urban centers, as part of a security accord between Baghdad and Washington.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has repeatedly said that the militant attacks are likely to rise in the coming weeks to "undermine confidence in Iraq's own security forces."

Metro Crash in USA

WASHINGTON - The death toll climbed to nine in a rush-hour collision between two Metro trains in Washington on Monday, with scores more injured, CNN affiliates reported.

WJLA and WUSA attributed the information to officials for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

Commuter traffic along the Red Line, where the crash happened, will be "severely" affected Tuesday, officials said.

By late Monday, emergency crews had switched to recovery operations after halting rescue efforts.

One of the dead was the operator of one of the trains, transit authority officials said. The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating.

The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. on an above-ground track in the District of Columbia near the border with Takoma Park, Maryland.

Both trains were on the same track, and one of them was stationary when the crash happened, said John Catoe, Metro general manager.

A total of 76 people were treated for injuries at the scene, including two with life-threatening injuries, said Chief Dennis Rubin of the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department for the District of Columbia. Two of the injured were emergency responders, Rubin said.

Four people were taken to Providence Hospital in Washington, including two with back injuries, one with a hip injury and one complaining of dizziness from hitting her head, hospital officials said.

Washington Hospital Center said it had received seven patients from the crash with non-life-threatening injuries, ranging from serious to minor. One person needed surgery. Howard University Hospital reported three patients from the crash and Suburban Hospital in Maryland said it had two.

One car was "about 75 percent compressed," and recovery workers aren't sure if any more bodies are inside, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty told CNN's "Larry King Live" on Monday night.

"We just haven't been able to cut through it to see if there's bodies in there," Fenty said.

"The scene is as horrific as you can imagine," Fenty said in a news conference. "One car was almost squeezed completely together."

A certified nursing assistant who was on one of the trains told CNN affiliate WUSA she was trying to help those in severe condition after the crash, including a lady who appeared to be in her 20s.

"She is very, very torn in her legs -- the muscles and everything are torn, ripped through. She had metal pieces in her face," said the nursing assistant, who said her name was Jeanie.

Other witnesses described seeing more blood than they had seen before.
Tom Baker, who was in the train that hit the stationary train, told WUSA that after the collision, he looked toward the front of the car, and when the smoke cleared, "all you could see was sky."

Jasmine Gars, who also was on the moving train, told CNN's "Larry King Live" that the collision "was like nothing I've ever felt before."

"It was like we hit a concrete wall," Gars said. "Almost immediately, I fell off my seat. Another person -- I don't know who -- flew off their seat. And the lights went off and smoke started filling the train car."

Groups of people wearing green plastic ribbons to show they had been checked by paramedics left the crash scene about 90 minutes after the accident. Some were crying, and a woman with her arm in a sling who gave her name as Tijuana described the crash as "an earthquake."

A Metro statement said both trains were on the same track in the same direction, south out of the Fort Totten station. The operator who was killed was on the trailing train, it said.

"Metro officials do not know the cause of the collision and are not likely to know the cause for several days as the investigation unfolds," the statement said.

The NTSB team arrived to investigate the crash, assisted by the FBI Evidence Response Team, according to NTSB board member Deborah Hersman, who said she had walked the tracks by the accident scene.

"I can tell you it is a scene of real devastation down there," she said.

Hersman said both trains contained six cars. The trailing train, she said, struck the other train from the rear and its "first car overrode the last car of the other train in an accordion fashion."

She said it wasn't clear whether the trains carried devices that record speed and other data.

"It depends on the series of the cars," she said. "And then it will depend on whether the devices are damaged."

The recorders can provide key information, according to Peter Goelz, a former NTSB managing director.

The investigators "are going to look very carefully at the event recorder in the train that hit the stopped train," he said. "Unfortunately, in a number of train accidents recently, both in Boston and in Southern California, you had the engineer being distracted. My hope is that's not the case here."

In a Boston trolley accident in May and a commuter train accident near Los Angeles last fall, the operators were sending text messages just before the accidents. Since then, the California Public Utilities Commission has banned train engineers from using cell phones on duty.

The Washington transit authority told investigators that trains normally operate in automatic mode at rush hour, Hersman said, adding that investigators were trying to determine whether that was true during the accident.

Amy Kudwa of the Department of Homeland Security said, at this early stage, there was no indication of anything other than an accident.

"We will continue to monitor closely and provide support in any way needed," Kudwa said. It was the second Metro crash to involve fatalities in the 33-year history of the transit authority. In January 1982, a derailment killed three people. The only other collision between Metro trains occurred in 2004.

"We are extremely saddened that there are fatalities as a result of this accident, which has touched our Metro family," Catoe, the Metro general manager, said in a statement. "We hope to have more details about the casualties later today. Our safety officials are investigating and will continue to investigate until we determine why this happened and what must be done to ensure it never happens again."

President Obama issued a statement saying that he and the first lady were "saddened by the terrible accident," and thanking first responders "who arrived immediately to save lives."

Jodie Wickett described feeling a bump on the track, then being flung forward when the train suddenly halted a few seconds later. She said she hit her head, but managed to get out and go to where the collision occurred a few cars up, with one train car atop another.

"There was debris, and people pinned under in between the two cars," Wickett said. "We were just trying to get them out and help them as much as possible, pulling back the metal."

People were badly injured, she said, adding that "ones that could speak were calling back as we called out to them."

Finally Guardian Council rules out vote nullification

Iran's Guardian Council rules out the possibility of nullifying the country's June 12 Presidential election, saying there has been no record of any major irregularity.

Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, the council's Spokesman said late on Monday that most of the complaints reported irregularities before the election, and not during or after the vote. He added that the Guardian Council was not the relevant body to look into such complaints.

The Guardian Council is the body in charge of supervising the elections and has to approve the outcome before any result could be official.

"If a major breach occurs in an election, the Guardian Council may annul the votes that come out of a particular affected ballot box, polling station, district, or city like how it was done in the parliamentary elections," Kadkhodaei said.

"Fortunately, in the recent presidential election we found no witness of major fraud or breach in the election. Therefore, there is no possibility of an annulment taking place," he added.

Iran's Interior Ministry declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the winner of the June 12th election with almost two-thirds of the vote.

The defeated candidates, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Mohsen Rezaei, cried foul once the results were announced and reported over 600 irregularities in the electoral process to the Guardian Council.

Kadkhodaei also denied accusations that polling stations had closed before all voters could cast their ballots.

He said in some polling stations balloting had continued up to three-and-a-half-hours past the official 10 p.m. deadline.

"We had polling stations in Golestan Province that were open to voters until 2 a.m. Although 10 p.m. was announced as the closing time, polling stations were told to allow people to vote as long as there were queues," he said.

The council had agreed to randomly re-count 10% of the ballots. However, Mousavi and Karroubi rejected the move, calling for the annulment of the election.

The spokesman also announced that the Guardian Council has received reports from relevant provincial boards that have been assigned to look into complaints regarding illegal campaigning on Election Day, expelling candidate representatives from polling stations and paying for votes.

Kadkhodaei concluded that the initial reports showed that no "series of violations had occurred."

Roman Abramovich has sanctioned a lucrative offer for Carlos Tevez as Chelsea attempt to beat Manchester City to the signature of the Argentina international and flex their financial prowess for new manager Carlo Ancelotti. Tevez's future became a straight fight between Eastlands and Stamford Bridge yesterday when it was confirmed he had rejected a £25.5m move to Manchester United and would be following Cristiano Ronaldo out of Old Trafford.

City remain favourites to sign Tevez on an estimated £150,000 a week but have yet to finalise an agreement with Kia Joorabchian, the head of the consortium who own the 25-year-old's economic rights. City are also acutely aware of Chelsea's determination to provide Ancelotti with marquee signings this summer.

Chelsea have missed out on several stellar names in the past year, including Kaka and Robinho, who joined City for a British record £32.5m transfer fee last summer having been close to moving to Stamford Bridge. Glen Johnson and Franck Ribery, two targets for this close season, are expected to join Liverpool and Real Madrid respectively. Tevez, therefore, has emerged as a test of Chelsea's pulling power under Abramovich.

United yesterday announced that Tevez had rejected their offer of a permanent five-year contract following a further round of talks between Joorabchian and David Gill, the club's chief executive, on Friday night.

The deal would have been worth £110,000 a week, placing the striker alongside Rio Ferdinand and Dimitar Berbatov as the club's highest earners. United set a deadline of midnight on Friday, having finally agreed to pay the option price on 3 June, only for Joorabchian to announce last night: "I think it was a little bit too late and there wasn't enough time for Carlos to think about it."

Old Trafford officials, however, believe 16 days was sufficient time for Tevez to decide whether to remain with a club he has known for two years and claim Joorabchian told Gill the player would be leaving on Friday. "The Club agreed to pay the option price of £25.5m and offered Carlos a five-year contract," announced United. "Disappointingly, however, his advisers informed the club that he does not wish to continue playing for Manchester United."

Despite their initial reluctance to meet the option price agreed when Tevez joined the club on loan in 2007 the Argentinian's exit represents a significant setback for Sir Alex Ferguson, who rang the forward frequently during his holiday in the south of France in an attempt to convince him to stay. With Ronaldo expected to complete his world record £80m transfer to Real Madrid next week, Tevez's decision means United have lost the source of 40 of their 119 goals in all competitions last season. United will now intensify efforts to entice the Lyon forward Karim Benzema to Old Trafford.

Joorabchian blamed procrastination by United for the player's departure. "I think Carlos is a little bit sad," he said. "He's enjoyed two great years at the club. They've won two Premier League titles, one Champions League title, one Carling Cup in his time but they didn't really give him any offers. Over the duration of two years there was a lot of talk about signing him but we never actually got to the point of actually receiving any offers for him.

If it was, let's say, Wayne Rooney's contract finishing six months before, or Cristiano Ronaldo's contract finishing six months before, would they have tried to secure their services a bit sooner? He has that little bit of a feeling that maybe he wasn't the most wanted person at United. Rightly or wrongly, that's how he feels."

Scores killed in Iraq's truck bombing

More than 46 people have been killed and 166 others have been wounded in a truck bombing near a Shia mosque in northern Iraq, authorities say.

The explosion targeted the mosque in the south of the city of Kirkuk on Saturday.

"The toll from the suicide explosion has reached 46 killed and 166 wounded," Kirkuk provincial deputy police chief Torhan Yusuf Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Earlier on Friday, two Iraqi security agents were killed and another two were wounded as a bomb ripped through Tabaj village in the town of Jalawlaa in the Khanaqin district of the Diyala province.

In other incident on Friday, a policeman was killed north of Baquba. The incident happened on the main road between Jalal and al-Saadiya, south of Khanaqin.

US President Barack Obama has warned Iran to stop all "unjust action against its own people", after another day of protests over the presidential poll.

Witnesses said security forces used batons and live ammunition in clashes with protesters, who had gathered in defiance of the country's leader.

Mr Obama urged Iran's leaders to "govern through consent, not coercion".

Defeated candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi repeated calls for the election to be annulled on the grounds it was rigged.

Mr Obama, in a statement from the White House on Saturday, said: "The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

It was Mr Obama's second statement in as many days on the Iranian crisis.

On Friday he warned the country's clerical leadership: "The whole world is watching.

"The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government."

Republicans critics of the administration have accused Mr Obama of not being outspoken enough in his condemnation of the Iranian government.

But the BBC's Jon Donnison in Washington says the president is treading a fine line - he does not want to be seen to be interfering, which could stir up anti-American sentiment within Iran and work against the protesters.

On Friday, after a week of unrest since the 12 June re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned protesters not to continue their rallies.

But thousands attempted to gather at Enghelab and Azadi squares in the centre of the capital on Saturday.

The two squares were blocked by police, and large groups of protesters were dispersed before regrouping into smaller clusters, witnesses said.

It was unclear if Iranian political leaders had backed the latest rallies.

Curbs on media

A BBC reporter said he saw one man shot and others injured amid fighting, with streets littered with burning debris.

Foreign news organisations - including the BBC - have been subjected to strict controls preventing reporters from leaving their offices.

As night fell, protesters could be heard shouting Allahu Akhbar (God is Great) from rooftops as they have done on previous nights.

In a letter to Iran's powerful Guardian Council, Mr Mousavi, who had not made a public comment for two days, reiterated his calls for the election to be declared void.

He alleged the vote was rigged months previously.

Official results of the presidential poll gave President Ahmadinejad a resounding 63% of votes, compared with 34% for Mr Mousavi, his nearest rival.

Analysts say the street protests are a challenge to ruling authorities, unprecedented since the Islamic revolution of 1979.

Mr Mousavi, along with fellow challengers Mehdi Karroubi and Mohsen Rezai, had been expected to discuss more than 600 objections they had filed complaining about the poll with the Guardian Council on Saturday

But neither Mr Mousavi nor Mr Karroubi attended the meeting.

State TV quoted the Guardian Council as saying it was "ready" to recount a randomly selected 10% of ballot boxes.

It had previously offered a partial recount of disputed ballots from the election, rather than the full re-run of the election demanded by protesters.
